RUGS CARE, MAINTENANCE & CLEANING

All of our rugs are handmade by master weavers in Portugal at Beiriz Atelier since 1919. Using the hand tufting technique with state of the art technologies, that support this artisan production, we create designs and textures that fit perfectly in any interior project. Therefore, they are of high quality and durability.

Follow the guidelines below to extend the life cycle of your rug.

MAINTENANCE

The most important thing is regular maintenance: vacuum your rug.

We recommend vacuuming at least once a week, a few times if possible, and respecting the direction of the fiber. Above all, use the vacuum cleaner at medium power and do not use heads with teeth or rollers, they could damage the rug.

We recommend not taking the rugs to the cleaners too often. If it is essential, always make sure that it is a specialized rug cleaner. Hand-tufted rugs are created with a layer of latex to attach the tufts to the base. This layer is hidden beneath the rug’s fabric liner. The chemical solvents used in dry-cleaning spoil latex, which will ruin your rug permanently. To enjoy and extend the life of your NIUBÓ rug, we recommend that you use the services of a specialist dry-cleaner when necessary.

STAINS

We know accidents can happen. To remove a stain you have to act quickly to prevent it from drying out. Most stains are easy to remove as long as you act immediately. It is important to prevent stains from drying out.

On wool areas use a wet and white cotton cloth with a drop of mild soap. Tap the stain softly to suck the stain always from outside to inside. On silk areas don’t use water neither soap at first. Same process, tap the stain softly to suck the stain always from outside to inside. If the stain doesn’t go away try to use the cloth wet but with the least of water as possible.

We recommend that before applying any solution, test a corner and then apply to the stain and always wipe the stain from outside to inside to avoid spreading dirt onto clean areas/areas.

GENERAL TIPS

When the rug arrives let it relax. Open the packaging and leave it flat. Marks of being folded are normal and they will go away after a few days. We recommend not to add any furniture at least for the first 3 to 5 hours, if possible a day. The latex of the back of the rug can smell for a few days, it’s normal, let it breath and have as much as ventilation possible in the room.

The silk in many rugs, when they are new, tends to fluff and shed some hair during the first few weeks, don't worry, it is normal and does not affect the quality of the rug. To remove it, pass the vacuum cleaner in the direction of the plush as many times as possible during the first two weeks.

As a result of vacuuming, loose threads may appear on some rugs. We advise matching these threads with scissors or pulling them back with a crochet hook.

We recommend rotating the position of the mat regularly to prevent wear in the same area. Repeated friction at the same point can affect the structure of the rug. By rotating the rug we also prevent it from aging in the sun evenly as, with continued exposure to the sun, the colors of the rug can lighten a bit.

We also recommend the use of non-slip bases; they avoid direct contact with the ground and thus reduce dust retention and improve anchoring to the ground.
